The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
